Description
This rugged 5.6 mi (9.2 km) loop offers a full-on jungle adventure to the summit of Mt ‘Alava – complete with 56 ladders, 783 steps, and some of the most epic views in American Samoa. The trail starts at Upper Sauma Ridge (look for the wooden ladder across from the Pola Island lookout) and ascends through dense forest along narrow ridgelines. When the summit is open (currently closed due to storm damage), you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over Pago Pago Harbor. From there, the trail continues down to Vatia village, finishing in a backyard (yes, really) before you walk back to your starting point.
Highlights
- Climb 56 ladders and 783 steps to reach one of Tutuila’s highest points
- Hike a full loop through jungle, ridgelines, and remote terrain
- Get sweeping views over Pago Pago Harbor and the northern coast
