Description

Once home to American Samoa’s most iconic attraction, the Aerial Tramway Lookout offers the best panoramic views over Pago Pago Harbor – and a fascinating glimpse into the island’s past. From 1965 to 1992, the tram carried engineers (and later tourists) from Fagatogo to the summit of Mt ‘Alava, soaring over the harbour at heights of up to 491 m (1,612 ft). Today, a peaceful fale pavilion stands in its place, surrounded by lush gardens and sweeping views of the mountains, villages, and working harbour. A memorial on-site also commemorates the tragic 1980 plane crash that occurred when a U.S. Navy aircraft struck the tramway cable during Flag Day celebrations.

Highlights

  • Discover the story of American Samoa’s historic aerial tramway
  • Visit the peaceful fale and flower gardens with epic harbour views
  • Reflect at the memorial for the 1980 U.S. Navy crash victims
